Heat olive oil in a deep pan or casserole dish over medium heat. Brown the bragioli on all sides for about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove and set aside. In the same pan, sauté a diced onion until soft, add 2 cloves of crushed garlic, then pour in 2 tins of chopped tomatoes and a cup of water. Add a bay leaf, season with salt and pepper. Return the bragioli to the sauce, bring to a gentle simmer, cover and cook on low heat for 1.5-2 hours until the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened. Turn the rolls occasionally. Serve with spaghetti or mashed potatoes, spooning plenty of the rich tomato sauce over the top.
